Or is it just beginning? No, no, it's actually done. I finished the story mode of GTAV this morning (I have a job, I swear!), and I'm satisfied... I guess. Not to knock what Rockstar was trying to accomplish with three main characters, but I think I like these games better when you become wholly invested in one character and their rags-to-riches/empire-building story. Maybe it would've worked better if their stories were less intertwined and intersected only at key moments, so each character would be a little more fleshed out. I found it hard to care about Michael's shit, and also I quickly got tired of not being able to kill his dumbass son.

I think another reason it wasn't as satisfying is that in each of the other games, the main character moved through the story with purpose, with an ultimate goal driving them to put up with acting as an errand boy or hired goon for some rich asshole. Niko had his "American Dream," C.J. was trying to avenge the death of his mother, and Tommy Vercetti was chasing the biggest cocaine empire in Vice City. In contrast, and with few exceptions, the characters in GTAV all feel like they're being forced through the story, unwilling participants in schemes by people with more power than them. They get excited occasionally, and they enjoy the spoils, but we are constantly being reminded that they don't actually want to be doing any of this. It's hardly inspirational.

Also, given how massive they made the map, I was really hoping that driving would be the focus of a lot of missions. And while you'll use a car in a lot of them, for the most part it's just to get from A to B and maybe lose the cops. It would have been nice to have a few more races, highway shootouts, and/or off-road driving as mandatory missions.

But while the story is a little lacking, the game itself is obviously a lot of fun. Online is too, although it's hard to interact with other players in free mode without getting gunned down. And DAMN are things expensive! I guess they don't want everyone armed to the teeth, but I wasn't expecting all the guns to be like triple the price from story mode.
